The Athenaeum Theatre is one of the oldest public institutions in Victoria. It was founded as the city’s first Mechanic’s Institute in 1839. Later, the building was converted to a theatre, where it was the first venue to show moving pictures (in 1896) and talking pictures. The city council met here until 1852 when the Town Hall was built. Today, it is host to the Melbourne Opera, Last Laugh Comedy Club, and other live events. Walk the historic aisles and take your turn on the stage.
