Winston Churchill, one of the most influential people in British history, was born in 1874 at Blenheim Palace. Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill was a British statesmen, two-time prime minister, British Army officer, historian, writer, and artist. Among other honors, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature and honorary citizenship of the United States. He is most noted for his political activity, and he served in many political and cabinet positions over a period of more than half a century. He served as Prime Minister during World War II, from 1940-1945, when his speeches and radio broadcasts helped to inspire British resistance. Blenheim Palace was built in the early 18th century to celebrate victory over the French in the War of the Spanish Succession. In particular, it was built as a gift to the 1st Duke of Marlborough, John Churchill, the military commander who led the Allied forces in the Battle of Blenheim on 13th August 1704.
