Meet Proud New U.S. Citizen and First Time Voter, Leroy Spencer

Originally from Jamaica, this Customer Support Engineer here at Matterport urges us to participate and appreciate our unique democracy

Q: Tell us about your background and what brought you to America.

I grew up in Jamaica in an extended family. Mom and Dad worked hard on minimum wages to support me and my six sisters. I always had a passion for sports and my number one hobby was soccer. I was also an honor student in school, as I knew my education and athletic skill set would help me change the foundation of my surroundings. Through hard work and dedication and upon my matriculation through high school, I was fortunate to be granted an Academic/Athletic scholarship to Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Q: When did you join Matterport? Tell us what you do.

I joined Matterport in June of 2018. My role at Matterport is a Customer Support Engineer. I also wear other hats, such as being one of the leaders on the Matterport Diversity Council group. I am very passionate about both roles, as I get to interact with customers and also learn more about my colleagues internally through diverse interactions. I also have the opportunity to spread awareness and formulate cultural ideas and plans.

Q: Why did you decide to become a US citizen? What was your experience becoming one?

Coming to America was not only a goal of mine but also to become a US citizen, in order to create a better life for myself and my family. The journey to becoming a US citizen was challenging and tedious but one that reaped a fulfilling reward.

Q: How does it feel to be able to vote for the first time in the US?

Voting for me was super essential, as it was my first time ever voting in life. When I migrated to America, I was about to be 18 years old and the election in Jamaica had already passed.  Therefore the experience I garnered voting, is one I will never forget and always cherish. I am proud to say that I have made my mark as a first timer and proud citizen.

Q: Do you have words of wisdom you’d like to share about the importance of exercising your ›right to vote?

Voting is the key to ensure that we create a better society for ourselves and families. The purpose of voting gives us the opportunity to let our voices be heard as citizens. Therefore it is our right duty and goal to seize the opportunity when it is presented.

Q: What are some of the things you’re most passionate about or proud of?

I am passionate and proud about a lot of things in life. However, I am most passionate about teaching. I like to share ideas and create an environment for others to learn and cultivate. I am also passionate about sports, soccer specifically, as I endured a partly successful career as a past professional. My proudest accomplishment to date is migrating to America and playing the role of breadwinner in my family. To be able to help them and ease their burden is something that I am very proud of.

Q: Anything else you would like to add?

Never let a dream dry up like a raisin in the sun. If you want something in life, please eradicate the words “cannot” and “impossible” from your mindset and vocabulary.  My motto in life will always be “hardwork and determination are the keys to success. If you want to achieve it, you have to believe it.”
