Basics

What is a Matterport Space?

A Matterport Space, or a 3D Space, is a complete three-dimensional representation of a space. You can walk through and experience the Space as if you were actually there.

What is the Matterport 3D Media Platform?

Matterport offers an innovative end-to-end 3D media platform for you to easily capture, edit, and share 3D models of real world places.

Our platform includes:

  • Matterport Pro 3D Camera ($4,500)
  • Matterport Cloud for processing, hosting, and streaming your Spaces (starting at $49/month)
  • Matterport Capture App for iPad (free)
  • Matterport 3D Showcase web-based player for viewing Spaces (free)

The Matterport Pro 3D Camera has a built-in WiFi network that connects to your iPad plus a built-in motor that lets it rotate 360 degrees.

How do I create a Matterport Space?

Creating a Matterport Space from a real-world property is easy:

1. Place the Matterport Pro 3D Camera in evenly spaced positions throughout the space. You will use the Matterport Capture app on your iPad to control the camera. When you press 'Scan' on the app, the camera will automatically rotate 360 degrees on the tripod. Each scan takes about one minute.

2. See an instant preview of your Space on your iPad as you scan.

3. When you are finished scanning, disconnect from camera's WiFi network and connect your iPad to the internet (another WiFi network). Tap 'Upload' to send your scan data to Matterport Cloud for processing.

4. Processing will begin automatically and typically takes several hours depending on how many scans you took. The finished Space can be shared online with a link or embedded directly on your website.

Do I need special training to use the camera?

The Matterport Pro 3D Camera is easy to use and requires little training. If you already have basic computer skills and can use an iPad, then using the camera is easy.

Is special lighting required?

Because we use HDR (high dynamic range) photography to balance the dark and light areas of an image, no special lighting or lighting equipment is required. However, direct sunlight can interfere with data collection from the infrared sensor, so we suggest avoiding direct sunlight when possible.

What is the warranty on the camera?

The Matterport Pro 3D Camera has a warranty for one year under normal use. For more warranty details, please refer to the Terms of Sale.

Are you working on new features and functionality?

Yes, we are always working on new innovations and advancements to help our customers get greater value from our platform and their Matterport Pro Camera. These can be innovations in hardware (the technology of capturing a location) or software (processing the raw data into a useful, realistic 3D Space).

By offering a SaaS (software as a service) solution, we can make frequent updates to the infrastructure and code that benefits all of our customers. This enables us to make new functionality and bug fixes available to all our customers without requiring you to purchase new hardware. New features and functionality are frequently backwards-compatible with Matterport Spaces that you have already created.

If you have been a customer for more than 3 weeks, you have likely already benefited from our SaaS solution.

In addition to the Matterport Pro 3D Camera and Matterport Cloud service plan, what other equipment will I need?

The following items are required but not included:

  • An Apple iPad Air 2 or higher with at least 128 GB is strongly recommended for the best experience. See all supported iPads. The most recent version of iOS is recommended.
  • Capture App (available in the iTunes App Store)
  • Tripod suitable for holding 6.5 lbs or 10 kg (Matterport recommends the following tripods)
  • Quick release clamp (Matterport recommends the following clamps) The camera comes with a built in quick release plate.

We also recommend a camera carrying bag for transportation and protection.

Scanning a Property

Scan a Space User Guide

For a complete overview of creating 3D Spaces using the Matterport system, see our instructional video:

How long does it take to scan a typical home?

On average, it takes about 30 to 45 minutes to scan 1,000 square feet (93 meters squared) so a typical 2,000 square foot (186 meters squared) home can be scanned in about 60 to 90 minutes.

Is there a limit to the number of Scans in a Space?

Spaces are currently limited to a maximum of 200 scans.

How large of an area can be scanned?

For residential properties, 200 scans is sufficient to build Spaces up to approximately 10,000 square feet (930 meters squared). The exact square footage will vary depending on the layout of the property and furniture.

How will I know where to place the camera?

You may place the camera anywhere in the space to start. You should position the next camera placement 5 to 10 feet (1.5 to 3 meters) from your first position. As you scan the property, a preview map will be displayed on your iPad. Refer to the map below to see what still needs to be scanned.

Matterport Capture App for iPad Minimap

Is there an ideal distance between Scans?

Generally 5 to 10 feet (1.5 to 3 meters) between scans is a good distance. Scans that are evenly spaced throughout the property (forming a uniform grid) result in the smoothest walkthrough experience.

Can I scan outdoors?

Yes! The Matterport Pro 3D Camera can capture exterior spaces with 360° Views. 360° Views are spherical 2D panoramic images that users can view up, down, and all around. They can be accessed directly from your 3D tour, but are not aligned with the rest of your 3D model. Because direct sunlight can interfere with 3D data collection, we recommend using 360° Views for outdoor or sunny areas. Learn more about 360 degree views.

Using 3D scanning outside (to create a path or capture actual depth geometry) is not supported. However, some Matterport users have had success scanning gardens and patios when there is no direct sunlight (such as at dawn or dusk).

How much iPad storage is required to scan a typical property?

A typical capture job with 50 scans will take about 450MB of iPad storage. After you upload the scan data to the Matterport server for processing, you can delete it from your iPad.

Matterport Cloud

Matterport Cloud User Guide

What is Matterport Cloud?

Matterport Portal Dashboard

How many Spaces can I host on my.matterport.com?

The number of Spaces you can host at one time depends on your service plan. We offer a variety of service plans with monthly and annual subscription options. For more information, please see buy.matterport.com

“Up to X spaces” is the maximum number of Spaces you can keep in your account at once. You can permanently delete unneeded Spaces from your account to make room for new Spaces.

How many users can I have?

A “user” is a colleague or employee with permission to upload scan data into your account and manage existing Spaces. The number of user accounts allowed depends on your service plan. Learn more at buy.matterport.com

Can I use multiple cameras with a single Matterport Cloud subscription?

Yes, you can use as many cameras as you want with your Matterport Cloud account.

Can I change my Matterport Cloud subscription level later?

Yes, you can manage your subscription level from our Billing Portal. Changes can must be made at least 3 business days before your next billing period to go into effect.

How can I import a Matterport 3D Space into CAD software?

You can download an industry-standard OBJ file, which will contain both the 3D mesh and textures. For a sample OBJ file, download this zip file of the Golden Gate Park Visitors’ Center.

International Ordering

Does the $4500 Camera kit include sales tax?

The US $4500 price does not include sales tax or VAT. Though Matterport does not ship directly to international addresses, we are happy to connect you with an approved local reseller in your market. Please contact us for more information.

Can I host my Spaces locally?

Currently we do not offer a local hosting solution for your Spaces, nor is it on our immediate roadmap. We believe that by adopting a SaaS (Software as a Service) model with a centralized cloud hosting strategy, we can offer more efficient deployment, improved support, and more frequent updates. Therefore, we feel that these benefits outweigh the advantages of a local hosting solution.

If you feel very strongly about a local hosting solution, please contact us and we'll be happy to reassess in the future.
