The Zwentendorf Nuclear Power Plant was the first commercial nuclear power plant built in Austria. Although the power plant was completely built in the 1970s, the plant never went into service. This was due to an Austrian referendum which prevented the start-up of this plant and two others on November 5, 1978. Today, the plant is used as a nuclear research center.
