The future of virtual tours
The UK-based company, Boost3D is changing the way its clients are interacting with digital twins across real estate, hospitality, education and facilities management sectors through its embedded video conferencing solution, OpenHouse Live.
The team at Boost3D began experimenting with the Matterport software development kit (SDK) months before the pandemic shut down businesses across the globe.
“The completion of OpenHouse Live was particularly relevant to businesses seeking opportunities to help guests, students, customers, or teams provide personalized, guided tours during lockdowns,” says Mark Cuddy, Chief Technical Officer at Boost3D. “OpenHouse Live is gaining real traction with great uptake across all sectors.”
With OpenHouse Live, companies can host up to 50 guests at a time, which translates into major cost and time savings for customers.
"When you consider the costs associated with holding an open house physically or even showing a single client around a property, we're helping real estate agents save enormously,” explains Cuddy. “It also allows them to pre-qualify the people they want to invite for physical visits, so it'll continue to be helpful after the pandemic.”
Potential customers are always online, and with Boost3D’s Facebook Messenger feature, real estate agents can be there to close the deal from anywhere. Users can embed Facebook Messenger directly to their virtual tour, so agents receive instant inquiries and increased engagement on the property portfolio. Prospects can request an OpenHouse Live meeting with the agent without ever leaving the tour.

Boost3D’s whitelabel partners such as View360, are helping realtors and homebuilders gain efficiencies with OpenHouse Live beyond the pandemic. “The Virtual Guided Tours allow customers a chance to ask their questions to our team in real-time regarding room layouts, sizes, and specification,” said Philip Hogg, Sales and Marketing Director with CALA Homes. “View360 produced a really valuable tool for us and potential buyers. Our Virtual Guided Tours will have lasting benefits outside the pandemic, enabling customers, who live a distance away from our developments, to remotely tour one of our showhomes. The virtual guided tours also allow people to do more of the leg work involved in house hunting remotely, before visiting site.”
In addition to the real estate sector, Boost3D has helped schools provide prospective students with immersive digital tours of their classrooms and halls. They’ve also created new efficiencies for facility management teams as well as travel and hospitality businesses.
"Events managers have been using the tool to show groups around a space. For people planning an event, they're able to receive an in-depth tour," explains Cuddy. "One of our clients is the hospitality listing site, Squaremeal, which helps guests select from accommodations across the UK by showing Matterport 3D tours. By integrating their platform with Boost3D via our API, their users can create and host meetings directly from the platform without ever having to go to the Openhouse website.
Dean Yardley, CEO at Squaremeal explains “‘Virtual show-arounds give our clients a simple and cost effective way to respond quickly to the sales leads we send them. By showing prospective clients around the venue, on their PC or tablet, they save themselves and the client time. They can quickly establish the suitability of the venue for their event or party, which increases conversion rates of any subsequent face-to-face meetings.”
Boost3D also offers OpenHouse Audio, allowing companies to insert unique audio points into Matterport digital twins, creating enhanced walkthroughs and increasingly personalized tours.
The Power of the Matterport Platform
Boost3D first got its start exploring the possibilities with Matterport’s SDK. The team researched how other platform partners were using the technology to offer companies greater value, extending experiences and reality by merging the physical and virtual world.
"We started looking at accessibility first, as Matterport’s digital twins are a highly visual medium,” explains Mark Cuddy, Chief Technical Officer at Boost3D. “We wanted to find a way to allow people who may be visually or physically impared the ability to experience the tool in a different way."
"We thought, ‘Wouldn't it be great if you could show clients around your space while hosting them on a video call?’,” says Cuddy. “Our approach is similar to the use of gaming technology to synchronize virtual tours. It’s like you’re all in the same game — like kids and 'Fortnite.'”
Now, using Matterport’s SDK, Boost3D can develop the features that reflect the needs of their users at a quicker rate, while also opening up opportunities for more products and services that align with OpenHouse Live.
“Our partnership with Matterport has allowed us to take their excellent base product and build new experiences for our customers,” says Cuddy. “Using Matterport’s developer tools allows us to continually reimagine applications for the digital twins, we’re excited to see where we can take them next.”
