FAQs

General

Do I need to purchase a subscription to use Axis?

You need a Matterport account to use Axis. The easiest way is to create a free account or take advantage of the Axis + 1 year Starter bundle subscription.

How do I choose between Axis and the Pro3 or Pro2 camera?

If you want to use your smartphone to capture spaces, use Axis to improve the quality of the captures. This option is useful when portability, convenience, and speed are priorities. Pro3 is designed to capture a property in its entirety, both indoors and outdoors, and to do so with a high degree of measurement accuracy. To use Pro3, you have to have a Professional plan or higher, and no Classic plans can use Pro3. The Pro2 is a great choice when you need to create professional-quality 3D scans with unlimited 4K photography and long battery life for multiple scans per day. To use Pro2, you have to have a Professional plan or higher. For a detailed comparison between different cameras, refer to our How to Select The Right Camera for the Job blog post.

How quickly does Axis scan compared to a 360 degree camera?

The time it takes to complete a scan with Axis is comparable to the time it takes to use a 360 degree camera. Axis has a fast spin time and because you're using your smartphone to scan, no transfer time is needed between the Matterport app and the camera. Additionally, for a 360 degree camera, you need to hide in another room, which takes time. With Axis, you can choose to walk behind the Axis as it rotates without needing to hide.

Which smartphones can I use Axis with?

You can use Axis with any Android or iOS smartphone that is compatible with the Matterport app. This means that the device must meet our minimum device requirements for Android, including having a gyroscope, or be on our list of supported devices for iOS. To check whether your device is compatible before you purchase Axis, download the Matterport app and try taking a scan using your smartphone. If the device isn't compatible, a message appears in the app to let you know.

Can I use Axis with a tablet, phablet, or any 360 degree camera?

No, Axis is designed to be used with a smartphone only.

Scanning

What’s the best place in the room to put the camera?

When scanning with Axis, plan your scan the same way you do with other scanning methods. We recommend positioning the Axis at least 2-3 feet (0.5 to 1 meter) away from walls, and moving it 5-6 feet (1.5 to 2 meters) every time you reposition it.

How long does a scan take?

If you're using lidar, a scan takes about 25 seconds.

Hardware

What does Axis include?

Axis comes with a carrying case, phone holder, shutter remote, rotating base, charging cable, tripod thread adapter, and a quick start guide.

What is covered under the warranty?

Battery

How do I charge the rotating base of the Axis?

Axis comes with a charging cable with USB Type-C male connectors on each end. A wall charger is not included. To charge the base, plug one end of the charging cable into the base of the Axis and plug the other end into a wall plug. The green lights on the front of the rotating base indicate the current level of charge. Axis is fully charged when all four green lights are solidly illuminated.

Can I use my own charging cable?

Yes, you can use any charging cable with a USB-C connection.

Does the Axis charging cable come with a wall plug?

No. You can use any plug-in wall adapter for your country that is rated to support 5V/2A output.

How long does it take to charge?

It takes about one hour to charge.

How long does a full charge last?

A fully charged unit can last approximately 24 hours with continuous use.

Do I have to charge it before I use it for the first time?

For best results, we recommend that Axis be fully charged before you use it.

Does Axis have an auto-shutoff feature to preserve battery life?

Yes, Axis automatically turns off after 30 minutes of inactivity.
