In 2015, Will Plato, VDC Manager for Hensel Phelps, was exploring ways to reduce the manual effort spent on organizing and labeling photographic data captured on job sites. On an average full build-out of approximately 200k sq ft, Hensel Phelps would typically take up to 10,000 photos, which would each have to be individually labeled and organized. This manual effort represents well over 40 business days of systematic data entry. 

When Will Plato discovered Matterport, they realized the automated stitching process would eliminate the need to spend countless hours sorting through photos and creating folders to share with other project stakeholders. Scanning a job site with Matterport’s 3D scanner takes the same amount of time as it does to photograph it, but automatically stitches the photos together to form an interactive 3D walkthrough. This eliminates the need to organize or label individual photographs. The walkthroughs - which also include zooming options - are available online in a matter of hours, with no post-processing or registration required. 

When compared to 2D photography, Matterport’s interactive walkthroughs are far superior because a user can self-navigate through a space as if they were actually there. The 3D Dollhouse, floor plan views, and self-directed navigation provide superior context to the job site than 2D photography. The 3D tours are also automatically available in virtual reality. Since acquiring Matterport, they have used the 3D scanner over 250+ times to document various job sites and have integrated it into their standard 6-Step Quality Process workflow.
