In Onerent’s evolution to provide a contactless rental experience, they faced challenges showcasing properties to prospective renters who couldn’t view the home in person. In fact, 40% of their renters do not live in the same city, county, or state as their desired home, making it difficult to accurately assess the home through traditional listing photos.

Onerent explored iPhone, DSLR, and drone photography to showcase homes, but as they expanded into more than six rental markets, these options were not a scalable long-term solution. Once moved in, renters who struggled with troubleshooting maintenance would submit a support ticket to Onerent’s 24/7 hotline. Their operations team looked for a way to increase efficiencies, decrease repair times, and create a better overall rental and maintenance experience for their customers.

Onerent has used the Matterport 3D platform for 1,300+ residential rental properties in over 700 cities since Fall 2018. With deep integration, they have decreased vacancy costs for owners, streamlined maintenance and repairs, and enhanced their contactless rental experience for homeowners and renters.

“Virtual tours are one of the great benefits you get from the Matterport 3D platform. We’re using the technology throughout the entire rental process for tours, troubleshooting maintenance, and conducting move-out inspections,” says Nick Taylor, Senior Vice President of Operations at Onerent.

Forty-eight percent of Onerent prospects are aged 18 to 34. Millennial and Gen Z renters expect a fully digital experience, so homeowners who list their properties using 3D virtual tours maximize exposure and increase occupancy rates among these demographics.

From each 3D scan, Onerent extracts high-quality photos and orders detailed floor plans. The collection of images, floorplans, and 3D virtual tours allows renters to view properties online at their own convenience.

Matterport’s immersive virtual tours allows renters to visit a large volume of properties in a short span of time. Renters can take their time “walking around” the home at their own leisure and roommates can do so as well from wherever they are. This not only increases the convenience of renting, but saves time and carbon emissions from having to drive to different locations to assess a property.

During tenancy, Onerent’s virtual rental assistant, ACE, provides a link to smart Mattertags embedded on their 3D virtual tours to help renters troubleshoot maintenance issues.

Onerent’s operations team uses 3D models to compare the move-out and original move-in conditions, providing a transparent and reliable inspection process that isn’t possible with traditional static images. Onerent has significantly reduced total hours spent on property inspections thanks to the Matterport platform.
