Step back in time with the digital twin of the Museo del Jurasico de Asturias

Walk amongst the dinosaurs on an outdoor path, examine the teeth of the Tyrannosaurus Rex, and learn about the world’s history with the virtual twin of the Museo del Jurasico de Asturias. Wanting to dig up more on how Matterport cameras were used to create this space for virtual visitors, we reached out to Francisco Iglesias, the CEO and Director of projects at Tactil Eventos Asturias 3D, to find out.

What inspired the 3D capture of this space?

The creation of this virtual space was born from an agreement with the Government of the Principality of Asturias to celebrate the 2,000,000 visitors to the Jurassic Museum of Asturias. We wanted to publicise this small but beautiful museum in the shape of a dinosaur footprint that is located on the so-called Jurassic coast and is one of the most important prehistoric ignite deposits in the world.

What are the “must-sees” you want visitors to explore and why?

The most striking part of the tour are the three central lobes with complete dinosaur skeletons, in which more than 20 scan points have been arranged, allowing the skeletons to be seen from different perspectives. Try zooming in on the front point to the jaws of Tyrannosaurus Rex, it creates a unique experience of entering its jaws.

What’s the one thing you want visitors to take away after exploring your 3D tour?

Visitors will gain a realistic experience of what the museum and its paths are like, and for those who have already visited they can relive the experience again with new points of view that improve the lived experience. Above all, visitors are able to experience this little gem of my region

What are the benefits of your Matterport digital twin?

I believe that all museums in the world should have a digital twin, it is the best way to achieve greater diffusion worldwide. By making these spaces available to the educational sector, Matterport tools allow children to know our historical heritage and culture in an interactive way. Lastly the virtual experience can create a similar pleasant permanent memory of what we saw in the virtual visit. All museums in their catalogs, brochures, and books should include a QR code with a direct link to their virtual visit, a way to create a permanent link over time with their visitors.

Do you have any plans to capture more 3D experiences?

I work on several heritage projects that I hope to develop shortly. One of them would make a city in Spain with great historical heritage a Spanish tourist destination digitized in 3D with Matterport cameras, complete with historical assets, museums, taverns, and wine cellars. I am also set to begin other exciting projects already underway in the industrial sector.
