Tour the halls of one of Barcelona’s most well-known institutions

Centre López Vicuña Barcelona and Jotavirtual are helping prospective students take their education a step further

For prospective students and their families, there’s nothing quite like exploring the halls of the Centre López Vicuña Barcelona. During the

decision-making process, an open house provides the perfect opportunity to imagine what it would be like to spend their time at the school exploring new passions and learning about the world around them.

Due to both geographic barriers and time constraints, the Centre found that not every student had the ability to visit the school in person. Fortunately, Jotavirtual and Matterport are making it possible for everyone to attend this all-important learning session through an interactive virtual tour.

We spoke to Jaime Flores, the CEO of Jotavirtual, to find out more about how his team leveraged Matterport technology to manage crises and make it all possible.

At Jotavirtual, why do you offer virtual 3D tours?

Jotalab and our virtual reality department, Jotavirtual, wanted to offer top-quality service, so that’s why we decided to work with Matterport, the leader in 3D digital twin technology. It's all about user experience. Viewers can navigate the space simply by clicking or tapping their screen, enjoying the amazing dollhouse view, and the transition from one point to the next is seamless. We want to offer our clients the best possible products.

Why do you focus on schools?

We like to collaborate with our city and society. Why not help schools show their spaces to more families, without physical barriers or time constraints? At Jotavirtual, we focus our energy on assisting different kinds of educational institutes to bring together innovative projects.

What inspired the 3D capture of this space?

In light of the pandemic, the Centre López Vicuña Barcelona needed a way for future students (and their families) to be able to visit. As such, the team decided to give virtual reality a try.

These last two years, Las Puertas Abiertas (Open House) has been held virtually. As this visit is key to the decision-making process for students and their families, the use of technology and these innovative tools complemented the Centre’s goal perfectly.

Additionally, the tour developed by the Jotavirtual team means that more prospective students than ever can access the Centre.

What are the “must-sees” you want visitors to explore and why?

Centre López Vicuña is an institution that teaches high school studies and training cycles (professional training). The internship workshops for each profession are essential for student learning because they will be able to do "real" simulations of their future work. With the support and advice of the Jotavirtual team, the Centre has been to emphasize these sections to demonstrate these lessons. Through videos, photographs, and PDFs, families can visit the spots and see the materials that are available to students.

What’s the one thing you want visitors to take away after exploring your 3D tour?

Our goal is to show that the Centre is an institution that has fully embraced new technologies. We also want future students to want to study in the Centre and become part of its educational family.

What are the benefits of Matterport digital twins?

The Centre could embed the virtual tour to its website and promote it through social networks. Furthermore, during the online meetings with families interested in the Centre, the school has shared the virtual tour with them to explain more about the different professional programs it offers.

Being able to imagine yourself walking through the corridors, the classrooms, the workshops, or through our patio, which is an oasis in the center of Barcelona, provides a user experience that is not comparable.

Do you have any plans to capture more 3D experiences?

If the Centre expands its educational offerings or includes new spaces, it definitely would certainly want to have the new areas captured with Matterport.

Anything else you would like to add?

We are very happy with the final result. The tour is a very intuitive interactive tool that is easy to use and allows families to visit the areas of the Centre of their choice and spend as much time as they want in each location.
