USS Midway Aircraft Carrier

Explore This! Take control of the helm on the USS Midway, a US Navy aircraft carrier that was used from 1945 to 1992. At 1001 feet long and 258 feet wide, the USS Midway was the largest ship in the world until 1955. While in operation, the warship supported 4,300 crew members and 200 aviators and could carry up to 80 planes. She has sailed in every ocean in the world and fought in a few wars, including the Vietnam War and the First Persian Gulf War.

Explore the bridge, the ship’s command center, where the captain and helmsmen would steer the carrier and get a great view of the ship’s flight deck through the panoramic windows. The bridge is outfitted with many intricate monitors, GPS systems, receivers, and radar screens, all to help navigate and control the cumbersome aircraft carrier. The USS Midway is now docked in San Diego Bay and has been transformed into a popular museum that attracts visitors year round.
