If you love art and design, a trip to Switzerland to see Design Miami/ in Basel, Switzerland, is probably on your bucket list. Founded in 2005, Design Miami is the global authority for collectible design, with flagship fairs in Basel, Miami and now Paris, that bring together the design world’s most influential players. This year's edition of Design Miami/ Basel will present an exciting array of works, from rare historical objects to unseen contemporary creations from renowned collectible design galleries and studios. This is the sixteenth edition of the Design Miami/ Basel fair in Basel, running 14-19 June at Basel’s Messeplatz.

Behind the Scenes
Earlier this week, Matterport sent a team of experts in using Matterport technology, to digitize over 8,000 square meters of the main exhibition space. The technicians captured the areas overnight, creating digital twins of a large portion of the massive exhibition space. After editing and adding some final touches, the Design Miami/ Basel team unveiled the virtual exhibition this week.
The creators of Design Miami/ Basel first used Matterport digital twins to create 3D Virtual Tours of their 2021 fair in Miami Beach. The digital twins allow anyone to explore the exhibition from anywhere, with the most immersive, curated digital experience possible, expanding access to the world’s premier collectible design event to anyone in the world with access to a smartphone or a laptop.
What to Expect at Design Miami/ Basel, Switzerland 2022
Design Miami/ Basel’s 3D tours feature guided tours of the show floor, curated by design experts. These experts highlight specific historic and contemporary pieces design as well as the galleries and studios presenting the material. They include interactive tags for visitors to click on to learn more and even purchase directly at designmiami.com. The curated tours are now live at designmiami.com.
Here are a few highlights from this year’s Design Miami/ Basel:
Superblue presents Pulse Topology - visitors to Design Miami/ Basel are welcomed by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's Pulse Technology. It comprises 6,000 lightbulbs suspended at different heights, creating a series of crests and valleys for visitors to enjoy.
Galerie Philippe Gravier - opened his gallery in Paris in 1980. An expert in twentieth-century furniture, he specializes in European and North American design from 1920 to 1970.
Joseph Walsh Studio - born on the south coast of Ireland, every piece within his dynamic body of work reveals an intuitive relationship between making sympathetic use of materials and an expressive engagement with form.
Yasmine Mahmoudieh - focused on the use of environmentally friendly materials and methods. Her unique vision is highlighted in her latest installation called Flowniversum, a combination of flow and universe.
Design Miami/ Basel 2022 runs from June 14 - 19 however, the virtual fair experience will continue to be available at designmiami.com long after this year’s Basel edition ends.
