4. The IT Chapter Two Experience: Pennywise’s Fun House

In 2019, Los Angeles briefly became Derry, Maine. To promote It Chapter Two, a pop-up experience recreated the town’s Canal Days Festival, and its centerpiece was a fun house with an entrance you’d never choose willingly: you walk in through Pennywise’s open mouth. The pop-up has long since closed, but this digital twin preserves it, so you can still step through those jaws and explore the twisted interior. Don’t follow any red balloons on the way out.

3. Asen’s Fortress, Bulgaria

High on a rocky ridge in the Rhodope Mountains, 2 km from Asenovgrad, the ruins of this medieval fortress saw centuries of war between the Bulgarian Empire, the Byzantines, and Crusaders before the Ottomans destroyed most of it in the late 14th century. Local legend says that’s not the end of the story. One winter, a traveler sheltering from a blizzard near the ruins watched the abandoned church suddenly glow with light. The silent bell tower began to ring, incense filled the air, and a congregation in ancient robes sang medieval hymns beside a phantom priest. When the service ended, the lights vanished and the church crumbled back into ruin. The area also has deep roots in Balkan vampire folklore. Explore the fortress and its fortified Church of the Holy Mother of God (Sveta Bogoroditsa Petrichka) in 3D.

2. Loftus Hall, Ireland

Ireland’s most famous haunted house, on the Hook Peninsula in County Wexford, is tied to a legend from the 1700s. A mysterious stranger joined the family for a card game, and when a card dropped, a young woman reached down to retrieve it and saw a cloven hoof. The stranger vanished in a flash of fire. Visitors still ask to see the room where it supposedly happened, and now you can explore it from the safety of your seat.

1. The Conjuring House, Rhode Island

This 18th-century farmhouse in Burrillville inspired the blockbuster horror film. The Perron family lived here in the 1970s, and paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren later claimed the property was haunted by the spirit of Bathsheba Sherman. Historians dispute that legend, but the story endures. Explore the house that launched a franchise, preferably with the lights on.
